3 Day Chimpanzee Habituation or Trekking in Kibale

Our 3 Day Chimpanzee Habituation or Trekking in Kibale would lead you to believe that an hour spent with chimpanzees on a conventional tracking safari is thrilling; but, anticipate the exhilaration of spending four hours with these primates during our 3 Day Chimpanzee Habituation or Trekking in Kibale. The 3 Day Chimpanzee Habituation or Trekking in Kibale safari serves as an excellent alternative to the 3-Day gorilla trekking safari, particularly in terms of cost-effectiveness.

You will spend half a day in the jungle observing the movements, analyzing the behaviors, interactions, and resting patterns of the Chimpanzees. For chimpanzee tracking, spending one hour with a habituated chimpanzee group costs US$250 for foreign non-residents and US$200 for foreign residents. For the habituation experience, the fee is US$300 for foreign non-residents and US$250 for foreign residents. In comparison to the US$800 cost of a gorilla trekking permit, this sum is relatively economical for a budget tourist.

Chimp habituation experience involves travelers accompanying researchers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority in their efforts to acclimatize a chimpanzee group within its natural habitat, observing the chimps’ daily activities from dawn as they commence their day. One does not merely observe and photograph the chimpanzees; rather, one engages in all actions associated with habituating these closest cousins of ours. A whole day of such an encounter is undoubtedly worth undertaking during your Uganda safari.

Upon arrival in Fort Portal, you may confer with your private Chimp Habituation driver/guide on a visit to the remarkable caverns encircled by the crater lakes. Within these exquisite caverns reside historical legends pertaining to the Bachwezi people, accompanied by geographical formations such as the breast-like pointed stalactites and stalagmites, locally referred to as the “Amabeere ga Nyinamwiru.” This legendary narrative concerning the Bachwezi tribe and their culture is astonishing. You will return to your reserved lodge to prepare for the subsequent day, which promises to be equally exhilarating as you engage with the chimpanzees.

DAY 2: Chimp Habituation Experience or Chimpanzee Tracking

Following breakfast, proceed to the Kibale Forest National Park headquarters for a briefing, where you will be allocated a chimpanzee group for tracking or habituation experience. For chimpanzee habituation, it is essential to rise early to encounter the chimps prior to their emergence from their nests for breakfast foraging. You will then track these creatures throughout the day.

3 Day Chimpanzee Habituation or Trekking in Kibale will introduce you to chimpanzees, black and white colobus monkeys, bush babies, grey-cheeked mangabeys, red-tailed monkeys, and many bird species encountered throughout your trek. Kibale National Park is home to approximately 138 bird species, including the black bee-eater and the crowned eagle.

A late lunch will be provided at your lodge, specifically for those who have chosen to participate in chimp tracking. Subsequent to lunch, you will tour the Bigodi marsh, which is privately owned by the local community. This marsh serves as a habitat for over 10 species of primates and is also an exceptional location for avian enthusiasts. Certain species, such as Warthogs, can also be observed in this marsh. The walk in Bigodi Wetlands is organized and overseen by the local community, ensuring that all monies collected directly help the residents surrounding Kibale National Park.
